The Smiths is an influential English rock band, formed in Manchester in 1982, known for Morrissey's distinctive vocals and Johnny Marr's guitar work, becoming one of the most important alternative rock bands of the 1980s. 英国マンチェスター出身の伝説的ロックバンド。1982年に結成され、1980年代の英国インディーシーンを席巻し、その短期間の活動にもかかわらず絶大な影響力を持った。アルバム『The Queen Is Dead』や『Meat Is Murder』、シングル「This Charming Man」「Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now」などで知られる。モリッシーの文学的で内省的な歌詞と独特のボーカル、ジョニー・マーのきらびやかでメロディックなギターワークが融合したサウンドが特徴。当時の主流であったシンセポップとは一線を画し、ギターロックの復権を象徴する存在として、多くの若者から熱狂的な支持を得た。1987年に解散し、再結成は実現していない。後のブリットポップやインディーロックに多大な影響を与え、英国ロック史に名を刻む至宝。
